THURSDAY NIGHT – Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five featuring Hilary Alexander
The Campus Five has led the way for nearly two decades as the US’s flagship swing small group, and to this day retains their reputation for authenticity, energy, and danceability. For ABW’s 20th year celebration, we are excited to begin the live music offering with this more intimate group, giving you the dancers a chance to get to know each of their musical personalities before expanding to larger bands later in the weekend.
FRIDAY NIGHT – Michael Gamble and the Rhythm Serenaders Orchestra
The RSO exists for the singular purpose of bringing back to life big band arrangements that were written for the large swing dancing audience of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Mostly avoiding the “greatest hits” of the era, the band will serenade with you effervescent, four-on-the-floor, rhythmically driving riff tunes and “b-side standards” originally performed by Chick Webb, Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Charlie Barnet, Earl Hines and more. With Laura Windley on vocals you can expect to receive healthy servings of Ella Fitzgerald, Mildred Bailey, Helen Humes, and other greats of the era.
SATURDAY NIGHT – The Jonathan Stout Orchestra featuring Hilary Alexander
The JSO is the preeminent swing big band playing for dancers today. Built around the singularly authentic voices of Hilary Alexander on vocals, Stout on guitar, Josh Collazo on drums, and Albert Alva on tenor saxophone, this powerhouse of a band takes you on a musical tour of the most exciting moments in swing era performance. Known for bringing to life full-night tributes at Lindy Focus dedicated to Chick Webb, Jimmie Lunceford, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, the band is famous for its versatile ability to channel the unique spirits of each of those bands (and others!) so that each show brings you more than just a night of amazing big band music, but also sweeps you along with an accurate and immersive portrayal of the mood and dynamics of history’s greatest swing bands. You won’t want to miss a single song!
